Bloodsport made his film debut in 2021's The Suicide Squad, but fans may not realize his comics origin is darker and more tragic than the movie.

Audiences met Bloodsport and learned his origin in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, but his comics origin is much darker than the one presented on-screen. In the film, Bloodsport was a brutal mercenary who nearly killed Superman. The comic book version of Bloodsport also began as a Superman villain, using high-tech weaponry provided to him by Lex Luthor to wreak havoc on the Man of Steel’s life.

There have been two incarnations of Bloodsport in the DC Universe. The first and best known is Robert DuBois, who first appeared in 1987’s Superman #4 created by John Byrne. The character made the leap into live-action in last year’s The Suicide Squad, played by Idris Elba. In the film, Bloodsport is a British mercenary with specialized weapons—one of which he used to almost kill Superman; this earned him a spot in Belle Reve and later on Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad.

Bloodsport’s comic book origin is far darker than the one presented in The Suicide Squad. In the film, he is merely a high-tech mercenary who almost got one over on Superman. While this holds true in the comics as well, there is far more subtext. Bloodsport, as he was introduced in the comics, is a tragic figure. While the Vietnam War had ended over a decade before Bloodsport’s introduction, it was still on people’s minds.

Bloodsport became a fan favorite thanks to The Suicide Squad, but fans may not realize that in the comics, his origin is dark and twisted, rooted in a shameful chapter in American history.
