Young artists ages 10-25 are invited to submit poster art for 988 Create!
Morning FastCast Dec. 9, 2024ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Department of Health and Youth Alliance for a Healthier Alaska have invited young artists to the conversation about suicide awareness and prevention.
Through Jan. 13, the Department of Health is asking Alaskans ages 10-25 to design posters promoting the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline as part of its 988 Create! contest. The lifeline offers 24/7 call and chat access that connects those experiencing suicidal ideation or mental health crises with trained counselors. The lifeline also provides support to those concerned about loved ones.
Jenny Baker is a health specialist for the Health Department’s Adolescent Health Program. She says youth are particularly vulnerable to experiencing suicidal ideation and mental health crises.“It’s so important for youth to feel like they are seen and heard in this topic because it impacts them so significantly,” she added.
“Youth want to be able to share things with their friends and positive messages of hope and healing,” Baker says, “Art is a great way to self-express and to be heard and seen.”Submissions are due by 5 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2025.
