Sugar Skull City events set to return to downtown Aurora

Downtown Aurora will once again be transformed into Sugar Skull City on Sunday, beginning a three-week celebration of the Day of the Dead which will run through Nov. 5.

Once again the Aurora Downtown group will join with organizer Jose Torres, local businesses and community members in the event that will culminate with large, outdoor celebrations on the final weekend of its run. Typically celebrated Nov. 1-2, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday in which friends and family gather to remember loved ones who have died.

A second component, Amoni argues, “is education.” “Teachers will bring down students and we’ve had several field trips as a way of educating about the holiday,” she said. “Another component is tourism and bringing people to downtown and highlighting Hispanic businesses which have grown which is really a reason why downtown has been so successful over the years is due to the investment of Latino businesses.
