Earlier, a Downing Street spokesman said he would"not get into specifics" when put to him that Ms Gray's team had been in contact with the prime minister about the forthcoming report.
Earlier in the process there were robust procedures to ensure Number 10 did not know about the contents of the interim report. Helen Ball, acting deputy commissioner of the Met Police, said:"A number of people, members of the public, have been both surprised and concerned at what they have heard. And I'm sure they will be surprised and concerned about the outcome of our investigation."After the end of the inquiry, Downing Street said the prime minister had been told that there would be no further action against him.
