Left for dead shortly before the trade deadline, the New York Mets have come to life and now sit just a game out of a playoff spot.
New York Mets' Michael Conforto, right, is greeted by teammate Pete Alonso after hitting a solo run home run against the Miami Marlins in the seventh inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019 in New York. Just after making the confusing decision to buy more than they sold at the trade deadline, the New York Mets look like they read the portents well. After sweeping the Marlins on Wednesday, August 7, they sit just a game out of the second wild card spot.
What then, is the Mets case? For starters, their +13 run differential is better than every team ahead of them for the wild card other than the Nationals, who they wouldn’t need to overtake anyway. The Cardinals are a tiny bit lower at +9 and the Brewers and Phillies have allowed more runs than they have given up. The Reds and Diamondbacks have greater run differentials.
Jacob deGrom and Zach Wheeler are also showing the top of their talent in the second half. deGrom has struck out over a third of the batters who dared enter the box against him in the second half. Wheeler, meanwhile, has greeted life post-All Star Break by allowing walks or home runs to a tiny fraction of hitters, to go with his typically strong swing and miss stuff. Stephen Matz has had his ups and downs, but he recently hurled a complete game shutout, and seems to be finding some consistency.
Furthermore, with the possible exception of Davis, no Met is playing well above his true talent level. It’s not a shock to see Syndergaard, deGrom and Wheeler all dealing, and their offense come alive. The weirder thing is that it took this long.
