Sudan Doctors Network says an RSF attack killed more than 25 civilians in Umm Badr, North Kordofan, allegedly on ethnic grounds, and urges an independent investigation.
The Sudan Doctors Network has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of killing more than 25 civilians in the Umm Badr area of Sudan's North Kordofan state, an attack the network says may have been carried out on ethnic grounds. The statement, reported by AP, said the victims were accused of siding with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The killings reportedly took place in Umm Badr, a locality in North Kordofan, where the RSF has been fighting the SAF.
Ethnic Targeting and Legal Violations
The network said the gravity of the incident is compounded by indications that the killings were carried out on ethnic grounds, under the pretext of accusing the victims of siding with the SAF.
It described the unlawful execution of civilians as a grave crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights standards.
The network warned that targeting people based on their ethnic or social affiliation could threaten social peace and fuel hate speech and violence.
It urged the United Nations and rights groups to launch an independent investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
The RSF did not immediately comment on the statement. However, the group typically maintains that it does not target civilians, a claim disputed by Sudanese authorities and international human rights groups.
Military Advances in North Kordofan
The Sudanese army has made advances across large parts of North Kordofan recently, following fighting with the RSF. It announced that it has taken control of 11 areas in the state.
Since late July, the SAF has taken control of large areas of North Kordofan after retaking the strategic city of Bara, as well as the areas of Jabra al Sheikh and Umm Siyala, and securing the national road linking Bara with Omdurman, west of the capital Khartoum.
The three states of the Kordofan region, North, West and South, have witnessed clashes between the SAF and the RSF since last October.
Background of the Sudan Conflict
Sudan has been embroiled in a war between the Sudanese army and the RSF since 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.
The war has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, with widespread reports of atrocities and ethnic violence, particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions.
The international community has repeatedly called for accountability and an end to the fighting, but efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire have so far failed.
