With her new video for “Confessions,” the lead single from her upcoming debut album, Los Angeles–based artist Sudan Archives set out with ambitious intentions. She wanted to flip the script on the classic rap video, swapping out the commonplace objectification of women with a celebration of their resilience; she planned to debut some portions of a new song, “Black Vivaldi Sonata,” and she also wanted to take the opportunity to ruminate on her own duality.
That’s clearly a lot to get through in the span of just four minutes, but Archives pulled it off with flying colors, managing to showcase some standout looks in the process. The clip starts off with Archives dressed in an ultra-dramatic black corset with winged details, playing an electric violin in a home in Queens and then dancing outside with her friends . Later, there’s an appropriately devilish red, semi-sheer plastic corset when she’s performing the role of seductress.
