The Roys are back.
Succession season 4 begins like previous seasons of the show — the Roy family is split into factions as they once again reckon with the fallout of a brutal betrayal. This time, Shiv, Roman, and Kendall are on the West Coast while Logan is holed up in his wood-paneled New York City apartment. The message is as clear as ever: One side represents the future , while the other looks like the dying past .
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY A brief time jump has given the three youngest Roys just enough time to sharpen their knives as Logan celebrates his birthday, while his children are thousands of miles away, holding a Zoom conference about the branding of their new media venture . As the GoJo WayStar deal looms, tensions are high and deal-making happens immediately.
Each season of Succession has found ways to upend the established power structures of the show in uniquely jaw-dropping ways. From Kendall accidentally killing a waiter and being brought back under his father's thumb at the end of season 1 to his subsequent betrayal of Logan at the end of season 2, all the way to Succession season 3's ending that saw Logan outmaneuver his children in the Tuscan countryside. There has been no shortage of power plays.
The cast's familiarity with each other continues the trend of stunning and layered performances across the board. Jeremy Strong's Kendall is relishing every moment of the new episodes, and it could be argued that he is the most complex of them all given what he's been through over the last three seasons. Each moment he's onscreen is imbued with Kendall's history and his contempt for Logan, a man he simultaneously admires and despises.
That these moments happen every episode in Succession season 4 is proof enough that perhaps the show is right in ending now despite some seeing it as a premature decision. The idea of ascension and mortality has lingered over the series since the opening scene of season 1, and it's culminating here with a season that warps these themes in increasingly intricate ways.
