Succession’s prop master created about 10 different versions of that crucial piece of paper. “It’s not just, are you CEO or not?” says LoreneScafaria, who directed Sunday’s episode. “It’s ‘Did dad love you, or did he disown you?’” Read more:
The episode tracks Shiv as she struggles to accept these dual, life-changing realities while going through the motions with those around her. “All these voices must be swirling in her head. . . about what it would mean for someone like Shiv to be a mother and juggle that with being a businesswoman,” says Scafaria.
“It’s a continuation of that line Shiv asked Tom in the last episode when her father was dying:‘Are you just being nice to me?’” says Scafaria. “She’s remembering that he was nice to her back then, what he’s saying is true, and she is desperate for that closeness. It’s so lonely what she’s going through.
As Shiv wraps her mind around the complete upheaval of her personal life, her brothers—who had been so, “All for one, one for all” the previous episodes—box her out to step up as their father’s Waystar successors. Once the board finishes their vote, Shiv hurries out of the room and trips down the stairs—a rare gaffe for the buttoned-up character. “That fall on the stairs is just that final humiliation,” says Scafaria. “As the only daughter in that family, I feel her rage.
“I think Roman and Ken have different ways of trying to express their love for their father,” says the director, shown particularly when they hear the comms team suggest that they plant a fictional story about Logan’s diminished leadership ability in his final days. “Roman’s way in that moment is to say, ’We’re not going to speak to this. It’s really unkind.’”, after she humiliatingly drops her belongings while being kicked out of the Roy home by Marcia.
