Though they didn't get to raise the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee championship trophy, four suburban spellers made an impressive stand on the most competitive national linguistic stage during last week's competition in Washington, D.C.

Rivera-Mills was 12 years old when her family fled war in her native El Salvador. She is a former first-generation college student. This year's event will highlight the achievements of individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact on their communities and have gone above and beyond to make a difference, such as in the areas of education, health care and environmental sustainability.
