The small, rugged Crosstrek is due for replacement soon.
is about overdue for an update, and so it makes sense to expect a replacement any day now. Subaru of Japan just teased a new small SUV, and it's likely to be the next-generation Crosstrek. We can't make out much, but the wagon-like proportions and smaller size would indicate the new Crosstrek is set to debut next week on September 15.
The current, second-generation Subaru Crosstrek was introduced back in 2017, five years after the first-gen model debuted in 2012. It's now been five years since 2017, so the timing seems right for this new SUV to be our subcompact Crosstrek. There's just 15 seconds of video for the teaser, confirming the new vehicle will indeed come with lights, both fore and aft.
The current Crosstrek retains the original's straightforward formula: It is, essentially, an Impreza hatchback with a lifted suspension and extra body cladding. These changes are enough to ensure the Crosstrek is viewed as a crossover; like every other Subaru save for the BRZ sports car, it gets standard all-wheel drive. Today's Crosstrek is offers either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine good for 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.
Considering the Crosstrek and Impreza are so closely related, there's been little clue hinting at a new Impreza model to go along with this new presumed Crosstrek. However, the Crosstrek will take some cues from another Subaru sedan, the new WRX, as it will likely install that car's new 13-inch touchscreen on the new Crosstrek's interior.
