Contact with the submersive was lost about 1 hour and 45 minutes into its descent.

This undated photo provided by OceanGate Expeditions shows the company's Titan submersible. On Monday, a rescue operation was underway deep in the Atlantic Ocean in search of the technologically advanced submersible vessel carrying five people to document the wreckage of the Titanic, the iconic ocean liner that sank more than a century earlier.

The search is being conducted both at and below the ocean’s surface, with the Polar Prince and Coast Guard aircraft searching the area for signs of the sub. An aircraft with underwater sonar capability also is being used in the search. “Our thoughts are with the families and the crew members onboard this submersible,” Mauger said. “We’re working very closely with all U.S. and international partners to provide any capability that we can provide to search for the overdue vessel and rescue the crew members onboard.”

OceanGate’s expeditions allows people who pay in the six-figures to come along, known as “mission specialists.”The missing specialists take turns operating sonar equipment and performing other tasks in the five-person submersible. The Coast Guard said Monday that there was one pilot and four mission specialists aboard.
