Style Q&A: New skin-care brand for men inspired by Canadian surgeon’s husband’s ‘shaving bumps’
Q. For those who aren’t familiar, what is Blair + Jack?Blair + Jack is a men’s skin-care line that I developed when I could not find solutions for my husband’s shaving bumps. He told me that the bumps were painful and I could tell that they affected his self image in a negative way. He had tried a few products available on the market and nothing seemed to work. I recognized that the products on the market were either lacking key ingredients or had complicated regimens.
I started by developing a combination of day and night creams that he used to treat his shaving bumps. We were both thrilled with his fast and noticeable results. Knowing that products work best on clean and well-moisturized skin, I then focused on formulating a cleanser and moisturizer. My goals were to cleanse men’s skin without stripping moisture, and moisturizing the face without clogging pores.
Each product I created is designed to be effective on its own, while also working well with, and being complementary to, each of the other products in the line. I chose each of the ingredients to be used in this line and was present for every step of testing and sampling to make sure that I liked the textures and function. It was important for me to have an understanding of each stage of the development of Blair + Jack, from product testing to packaging.
Q. What can you share about how the product formulations are influenced by your background in plastic surgery? As a surgeon, I use my knowledge and skills to solve people’s problems. I have a unique opportunity to improve people’s confidence and quality of life daily. I know that easy-to-follow regimens result in higher compliance in my patients so that was an important quality to incorporate into Blair + Jack.
