New revelations show Peter Murrell bought his wife Nicola Sturgeon's donated shoes for £4,000 at an SNP auction using embezzled funds, sparking questions about Sturgeon's awareness and the party's financial oversight.
The Scottish National Party is reeling from revelations that former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's husband, Peter Murrell, used thousands of pounds from the party's coffers to purchase a pair of her donated shoes at a fundraising auction.
The incident, which took place in 2015, has raised fresh questions about the couple's financial dealings and Murrell's control over SNP accounts. Murrell, who has admitted embezzling over £400,000 from the party, bought the signed Kurt Geiger green snakeskin heels for £4,000 after bidding stalled at £1,500. The shoes, displayed in a bespoke case, were later worn by Sturgeon at a meeting with then Prime Minister Theresa May.
Critics, including Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay, have questioned whether Sturgeon was aware of her husband's extravagant spending, which also included luxury shoe valet cases purchased with stolen funds. The revelations come as Murrell awaits sentencing on June 23, and as the SNP blocks parliamentary inquiries into its financial mismanagement. The auction, held at a St Andrew's Day gala in Glasgow in November 2015, featured the shoes as a marquee item.
Attendees were stunned when Murrell, then SNP chief executive, outbid others to reclaim the footwear. One person present recalled, 'Everyone in the room was absolutely astounded that he was prepared to pay that colour of money for his wife's shoes. Looking back, it makes you wonder where the money was coming from. But Nicola didn't seem worried or concerned.
' This was not an isolated incident; a senior SNP source noted Murrell had a habit of buying back items he or his wife donated, including a collection of fine wines. The source commented, 'Why donate the item if you wanted to keep it? Unless he was trying to show off and look as though he was the big saviour of the party with all of the cash.
' Murrell's financial misconduct extended beyond auctions. In 2019, during a visit to a Shetland jewellery shop while accompanying the First Minister, he boasted to the owner, 'I'm the man with the money,' and insisted on buying something. More significantly, in 2021, he offered the SNP a £100,000 loan during a cash flow crisis, a loan not registered for 18 months in breach of Electoral Commission rules.
The party was repaying that sum when Operation Branchform, the police investigation into Murrell's embezzlement, began. Now, Westminster's Scottish Affairs Committee is considering launching its own probe after the SNP and Scottish Greens blocked a Holyrood inquiry. The scandal has deeply tarnished the SNP's reputation, with Sturgeon's role and knowledge increasingly under scrutiny. The party has declined to comment on the specific allegations
