A behavioral condition prevalent in youth could be linked to differences in structure of a layer of the brain, scientists have found.a pattern of disruptive, aggressive, and antisocial behavior. Data from the study showed that those living with conduct disorder had extensive changes in brain structure , particularly in the brain's outer layer.

Per data from the study, those with conduct disorder had lower total surface area across the brain's cerebral cortex, whose function is regulating many aspects of cognition and behavior including memory, problem-solving, and emotions. When compared to those who had not been diagnosed with conduct disorder, those who had been were found to have a lower total surface area across the cortex and in more then three fourths of the 34 individual regions. Additionally, those with conduct disorder were found to have lower volume in many subcortical areas which also play key roles in behavioral regulation, including in the amygdala, whose function is to process emotions. A co-author of the study, NIMH Chief of the Section on Development and Affective Neuroscience Daniel Pine said that understanding these brain differences opens a door to developing a better approach to both diagnosis and treatment of the condition, which he said is 'understudied and undertreated.' "Critical next steps are to follow children over time to determine if differences in brain structure seen in this study are a cause of conduct disorder or a long-term consequence of living with the disorder," Pine said.NIMH said the findings from this study are consistent with evidence suggesting the link between the condition and the structure of the brain, and also suggests
