A new study shows that sonic booms from SpaceX launched may cause more environmental, structural damage than predicted.
Sonic booms from SpaceX launches could cause more structural and environmental damage than previously thought, according to a recently released study by Brigham Young University researchers. Data gathered from SpaceX’s Oct. 13 Starship Super Heavy launch showed these sonic booms, which produce sharp increases in atmospheric pressure, could potentially lead to structural and environmental damage in Boca Chica and other South Texas coastal communities.
2 miles away from the launch pad, researchers concluded that sonic boom pressure was about one to four pounds per square foot more than the Federal Aviation Administration predicted in its 2022 and 2024 Environmental Assessments.
