In-vehicle touch screens are increasingly replacing buttons and knobs.
While the touch screens may make it easier to perform some functions, it often means drivers have to take a hand off the wheel along with their eyes. New research from the University of Washington and Toyota Research Institute wanted to see how those touch screens impact driving ability.
“We all understand that you shouldn't be looking at your phone in the car, but we are increasingly driving vehicles that have these big touch screens built into them,” said UW professor James Fogarty. “People are having to scroll through a menu on a touch screen to turn on their windshield wipers or defogging system, and that can present a safety issue.” To test driving ability and the touch screen’s impact, participants operated a simulator, interacted with a touch screen, and performed memory tests to see how the drivers coped. Participants had to touch dots as they lit up on the screen while also trying to remain in the lane. Sensors tracked eye movements and the driver's heart rate. They found that when participants interacted with the screen, they drifted side to side in the lane 42% more often. Researchers said they want to use their data to make touch screens and their functions safer. They suggest eye tracking, or other sensors in the car could monitor the driver’s cognitive load and adjust functions available on the touchscreen accordingly.“We’re all using them, so let's understand them better,” said Fogarty. “Let’s learn how to make them safer and, of course, how to make them more enjoyable and more usable as well.”All flights between Seattle and the popular tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta have been canceled Sunday after the Mexican army killed the powerful leader oA Gig Harbor couple currently vacationing in Puerto Vallarta watched as chaos unfolded around their condominium in the streets of Mexico Sunday. An Alaska Airlines flight headed from Wichita to Seattle returned to Wichita shortly after takeoff this afternoon after a passenger’s cell phone overheated.Senate Bill 6200 would ensure that most tenants can install a portable air conditioning unit in their home.Snow is falling again in the Cascades.
