Researchers followed an 18-month trend after the Dobbs decision was reached.
Infant mortality rates in the United States were higher in the months following the Supreme Court decision toreported that most of the deaths appeared in infants with "congenital anomalies, potentially owing to frail fetuses more often being carried to term following the implementation of abortion restrictions."
Additionally, there was a 10% increase in infant mortality with birth defects which can range from heart abnormalities to spina bifida and other disorders. The study did not break down infant mortality rates by state but researchers added they expect deaths to be more prominent in states with more restrictive abortion laws.
Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller were two women who died in Georgia when they were unable to access legal abortions,The state's ban took effect in July 2022 prohibiting most abortions once a “detectable human heartbeat” was present.
