Chemicals used to straighten and relax hair have been linked to uterine cancer, according to the recent study, which found Black women in particular could be more at risk.

Researchers concluded that because the skin on the scalp has a higher absorption rate than other skin on the body, the any potentially carcinogenic chemicals and EDCs are more easily transmitted into a person’s system. The study found that Black women in particular could be more at risk for uterine cancer from these products for a variety of reasons, including “the higher prevalence and frequency of hair product use, younger age of initiating use, and harsher chemical formulations than other races or ethnicities.”
