A University of Texas at Dallas professor co-authored a study that examined whether rude behavior can mask sexism.
The idea for the study, titled “The ‘Equal-Opportunity Jerk’ Defense: Rudeness Can Obfuscate Gender Bias,” stemmed from a discussion between Jun and co-authors, Peter Belmi and Gabrielle S. Adams of the University of Virginia, according to“By ‘equal-opportunity jerk,’ we mean an individual who is mistakenly seen as gender-blind in their negative treatment toward others,” Jun said in the report.
The researchers also tested whether rudeness toward men obscures gender bias, the report said. In an online survey, the researchers asked nearly 5,000 male and female participants from professional schools to read Tweets of former President Donald Trump making negative comments about both women and men in July to August 2019. The researchers found that the more participants believed Trump was being rude toward men, the more they believed he was gender-blind.
