Students at Passaic High School are protesting a new district policy that says only American and state flags can be flown on school grounds.

Students from Passaic High School want the school board to scrap a new policy that allows only American flags to be flown on school grounds. Students want to fly the Gay Pride flag during Pride month in June. Here, Camila Perez, a freshman, was one of about a dozen students who protested at the school board meeting on Monday night. Some Passaic high school students want to raise the rainbow flag on school grounds to celebrate Pride month—just like they did last year.

“I think it is unfair and it discriminates,” said Camila Perez, who draped herself in the rainbow flag when she spoke to trustees at the school board meeting on Monday night. “It bothers me and it bothers the whole community.” “It wasn’t so much of a complaint as it was inquiries as to how the flags were put up there,” Rodriguez said. Passaic is a diverse city with many ethnicities and religions, he said, so it was easier to enact a blanket ban than to have to choose which flag displays to allow. But the state’s leading LGBTQ advocate said the board had done its students a diservice by lining up against the LGBTQ community.

One teacher, Jesus Velez, spoke of the “hurt” that he and members of the LGBTQ+ community feel. Velez reminded the board that New Jersey was one of the first states to require its public schools to have a curriculum that is LGBTQ-inclusive.
