Students taking new graduation exam need a higher score to pass — and teachers aren’t happy

“This is a reckless and harmful decision that failed to account for either the needs of students or common sense. It is estimated that the new math cut score alone could result in failure rates of 50% or more, showing how absurd it is as a measure of readiness for graduation,” Baker said in an email to NJ Advance Media.
Mulvihill cited the large number of students graduating from high schools in New Jersey that, upon enrolling in community colleges, require remedial education in core academic subjects.Ruiz told the board the 725 “is just way too low.” Students with a failing test grade may still graduate the following year via alternative assessments or a portfolio appeal process, as previously described by the state education department.
“I do understand we are within a rock and a hard place, and that time is of the essence. We have to, according to the courts, have our 11th grade students sit down for this assessment, and unfortunately I do feel that we have missed an opportunity to create a more robust and creative summative assessment that would help districts and instead came up with a response to the court mandate and didn’t use the opportunity to engage ourselves in a different manner,” Ruiz said.
