High school students from around the state staged a walkout Thursday protesting the state of education funding that Juneau lawmakers and the governor have haggled over for months.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Thursday’s walkout included students from around the Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough school districts. A contingent of students in Juneau also walked out of class Thursday, making their way into the capitol building where lawmakers were at work.
“I think they’re trying to send to the state that we care about our education and we really care about the SBA and we need it raised if we want to continue,” she said. “Budget cuts are going to start happening soon and it’s going to be really scary in the next few years. I mean, is planning on using a ton of their savings account to run just next year alone.
“It was discussed we have a walkout and that it be sooner rather than later, just because the Legislature moves really fast and students are the biggest stakeholders in this issue,” Schachle said. “That’s our statewide student government organization and it’s a statewide issue.” “We don’t have as much exigence here in the MSBSD, but I firmly believe that a problem for one student is a problem for all student representatives,” Schachle said.— made it clear Thursday that the two movements are unrelated, and that this protest has nothing to do with MSBSD and everything to do with the state’s lawmakers.
Kolendo oversaw the group of students that participated in the Career Tech High School walkout, but as the Student Advisory Board Representative, took a neutral stance on the issues facing education funding and didn’t actively participate as a student. “The governor has said numerous times he supports a BSA increase, but that money alone will not improve Alaska’s educational outcomes. Our public schools need educational reform legislation,” Dunleavy’s statement read. “Alaska’s public charter schools are the best in the nation and there are waiting lists of students hoping to enter a charter school.”
