Dozens of high school students spent a day learning about native plants and planting Christmas trees and sea oats in the dunes of Gulf State Park. They then shared their knowledge with 5th graders, continuing the legacy of environmental restoration in the area.

On Wednesday dozens of high school students spent the day learning about native plants and planting Christmas trees. And today they passed that knowledge on to 5th graders.

“This is an ongoing legacy. Students are educating students. It is growing and in fact, there are four locations at Gulf State Park that has been restored. And the students have planted upwards of 13,000 plants that are building up the dune fronts and protecting the community of Gulf Shores,” Amanda Post with Dune Doctors said.

“These kids are great. They love to be out here. Obviously, it’s exciting to miss school, but I just love to be able to teach, give back to the community, and to help the younger generation,” 11th Grader Price Stephens said. “We have the opportunity to be planting for protection mentors and encourage civic engagement and giving back to the community through the 5th graders and ourselves through working yesterday and today by putting out Christmas trees and planting sea oats to hopefully give back to the beaches of Alabama,” 10th Grader Portia Hollis said.
