Late Thursday, the House adopted its version of the state budget that included a rider noting that no money should be used for DEI “practices or similar programs, including personnel, training or activities” on state college and university campuses.More than 70 people registered to testify, but only about 40 waited until 8:20 p.m. when the hearing started. The debate hearing was delayed after a marathon debate on school choice.
He added that part of the reason he’s firmly against the “DEI agenda” is because he grew up in a time when “real racism” existed. On the other hand, Katie Williams, a graduate student at UT-Austin, told the subcommittee that the bill is a “direct attack on academic freedom” at Texas public universities.
Irene Mulvey, president of the American Association of University Professors, said she traveled from Connecticut. The bill is one of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s legislative priorities. In February, Gov. Greg Abbott’s office sent letters to public agencies calling DEI policies illegal.
