“I told them ‘I’ll listen, and we’re going to try to move through this together,’” Hunter told PennLive following Tuesday’s meeting. Middletown’s response has been generally opaque and hierarchical, Ibrahim said, with students’ concerns about even minor issues – such as arbitrary limits on how many students are allowed to use the bathroom at one time – getting lost somewhere in the chain.
The district does not have a designated student representative on the school board, Ibrahim noted, nor does it have any kind of coherent system for student or teacher recognition, leading to a culture of complacency.
