A-level students face a 'frantic race' for university places as record numbers are expected to apply directly for degrees through clearing
A-level students face a 'frantic race' for university places as record numbers are expected to apply directly for degrees through clearingface a “frantic race” for university places as record numbers of 18-year-olds are expected to apply directly for degrees through clearing, said Lee Elliot Major, Professor of Social Mobility at the University of Exeter.
Mr Nicholson warned that there is “no guarantee” a student’s first choice university will still accept them after they have been released into clearing. He urged students not to realise their university places until they were “pretty damn confident” there is a place at a different course.that clearing will be a “buyer’s market” this year, meaning students will have “more choice and more options than expected”.
“They need to have a good recruitment round to keep the wolf from the door in terms of financial positioning because universities are under the cosh financially at the moment,” Mr Hillman added.A drop in international students and income from domestic tuition fees have left some universities facing an existential crisis.
“When people log into Ucas, they’ll be able to see if they got their place, even if they’ve flunked a grade or two.” This year, 18 of the 24 elite Russell Group universities had vacancies on courses for English residents – a total of 3,892 courses between them. “Those with the sharpest elbows will have the advantage during any rush for places during clearing. More young people are questioning the worth and cost of spending three or four years at university.”
