Members of the current student-run sailing club said they enjoy putting their skills to the test on the water, but they’re looking for a higher level of competition

Members of the current student-run sailing club said they enjoy putting their skills to the test on the water, but they’re looking for a higher level of competition. “We just want to give the opportunity for students to meet other colleges, compete at a professional level and learn what it’s really like to get that high-level competition,” said the President of the sailing club Blakely Odom.

Every week, weather permitting, members of the student-run sailing club at the University of South Alabama gather at the Buccaneer’s Yacht Club to sail the waters of Mobile Bay. Senior nursing student Blakely Odom is president of the club and said the last time South competed at the collegiate level was in 2013. Vice President of the club Logan Blancheri said that’s changing. “We started doing promotions on the campus, having the school get involved with us and all of a sudden our appearance at school just exploded,” said Blancheri. “Already we’ve had individuals who are prospective students to South who have actually reached out to us during their tour days and interviews and would like to get a little bit of history from us on what we do, what our plans are, if we do plan on turning it into a collegiate racing team.”“We do currently compete but we only compete in local events,” said Odom. “We competed in the Water Wizz Regatta, and a couple of our students, including me and Logan here did pretty good. We got 7th, I believe 13th and 14th out of that event and it was our first time competing in a professional circuit.” He said they’ve been coordinating with South’s student involvement and recreation center, as well as other universities, to find out what it takes to get back to the race. Blancheri said welcoming both experienced and amateurs to the club is rewarding. “To see the smile on the kids’ faces who have never been out here sailing and being able to take them sailing has been just a lifetime experience for me,” he said. The sailing club’s goal is to get South back into the Intercollegiate Sailing Association by this fall. Members also want to encourage the community to come out and watch their local sailing competitions.
