Published: Oct. 28, 2024, 12:08 p.m.LORAIN, Ohio — After three decades , Lorain High School has resumed driver’s education, allowing students to complete online and in-car instruction during the school day.
The program, which is free for students, offers 24 hours of online coursework and eight hours of in-car driving instruction with a certified instructor, all integrated within regular class hours. Executive Director of Secondary Initiatives Mic Becerra revived driver’s ed during school hours because he recognized the challenges many students face in obtaining a license, Those barriers include the high cost of private driving lessons, as well as scheduling challenges with after-school obligations. “I help oversee career tech, and we’re asking students to do internships, get work-based learning out in the community. But some of them don’t have a driver’s license, so we’re asking them to do something, and that’s been an obstacle,” Becerra told WKYC. High school junior Julian Turner, currently enrolled in the class, believes the training will allow more students to learn to drive, especially if they don’t have access to a vehicle, or the money needed for private driving lessons. Turner has completed the online portion of the course, and will soon begin practice with an instructor in the school’s 2024 Honda Civic, which was funded through a grant and a $25,000 donation from Lorain County Job & Family Services, according to WKYC. With plans to enroll 50 to 100 students this year, Becerra hopes to add another vehicle in the future to allow more students access to the course. “It’s exciting, the community’s excited about it, the kids are excited about it,” Becerra said. “I saw the enrollment for second semester, it’s even larger than this first semester.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
