March got warm. May is around the corner. But the ice near the Nenana Ice Classic tripod is hovering around 50 inches.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Spring may be creeping up, but not fast enough to budge the storied tripod on the Tanana River in Nenana .
“Pretty impressive ice this year,” Alaska Climate Specialist with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Rick Thoman said in a Thursday interview. Prior to 2024′s iteration of Alaska’s annual guessing game, thickness hadn’t hit 50 inches since 2013, according to Nenana Ice Classic data. That year, the tripod traveled its fabled 100 feet to trip the clock on May 20 at 2:41 p.m.
“If the water level is high at freeze up, that can serve to keep the water flowing under that ice and keep it from thickening up,” Thoman explained. First, there’s the obvious way for the weather to eliminate ice: consistent heat. “If it’s persistently warm and sunny, we can rot the ice and it can melt right in place,” Thoman said.
April has also been cooler, routinely dipping back beneath freezing. “To get the ice to melt we ... need it to get sunny and highs in the 50s or, at this point, even the 60s,” he said. That’s unless snowpack melt beats high temperatures to the punch.
