On one hand, it’s an effective tool to help keep students on a drug-free path. On the other, drug testing raises questions about whether school districts are overstepping their authority and invading students’ privacy.
One thing that is certain is that drug testing is becoming more common in Northeast Ohio high schools. One day, it may come to a school district near you.Strongsville’s drug-testing policy, adopted Aug. 1, is a “response to the growing drug problems reported throughout our State,” according to the student drug-testing policy and procedures handbook. The school board recognized a need to discourage students from experimenting with drugs, alcohol and prescription medications. “We talked about a drug-testing policy in our district for five plus years,” Strongsville superintendent Cameron Ryba told cleveland.com. “One of the triggering events for us was the consistent increase in students that were using THC products,” Ryba said. “With the prevalence and access to THC products, whether it be vaping products or gummies...the prevalence of it in the schools, as well as the amount of use and the addictive nature of the use of that were caught were two big factors where we said, ‘Hey, it’s time that we put something into place to help curb this.’ ” Ryba added that implementing the drug-testing policy was discussed for more than a year and was in motion before Ohioans voted to legalize marijuana in November of 2023 When the idea of drug testing Strongsville students came up, Ryba sent out a survey to all of the other school districts in Cuyahoga County asking if any of them had a policy in place, and requesting feedbac
