Damaging winds will be possible in a storm system forecasted for much of Southcentral and Western Alaska from Saturday night into Sunday.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage officially picked up 1.4 inches of snow Thursday evening, making this the most snow the city has seen since Nov. 15. The time period between that was the lowest amount of snow that Anchorage has ever recorded.

The upper-level pattern continues to favor strong southwesterly flow aloft. This will lead to a series of storms riding north out of the Pacific Ocean and into Alaska. Accompanying these storms will be more warmth, winds, rain and areas of rain/snow. This will be a tricky forecast for the region, due to the complexities of how things will unfold, the formation of new lows, and just where we see some of the highest winds set up shop.

Strong Chinook winds will kick in Saturday into Sunday, with a high wind watch issued for the Alaska Range. Winds up to 80 mph will be possible, with the Chinook winds leading to well-above-average warmth this weekend. While highs will top out near freezing Saturday, we’ll see highs in the mid to upper 30s by Sunday. It’s possible that areas of the Alaska Range could see temperatures warm well into the 40s.
