A powerful storm is set to hit Los Angeles and Ventura counties, bringing the potential for severe rainfall, flooding, and debris flows. The National Weather Service warns of heavy downpours, particularly in the San Gabriel Mountains, and urges residents to prepare for the impact.

A powerful storm is expected to hit Los Angeles and Ventura counties this week, bringing with it the potential for significant rainfall and flooding. Meteorologist Kristan Lund from the National Weather Service predicts this storm could be the strongest of the season, with heavy rainfall beginning as early as Wednesday morning and lasting through Valentine's Day.

Lund warns that the San Gabriel Mountains are likely to experience the heaviest rainfall and snowfall, increasing the risk of floods and debris flows in burn scars, particularly in Altadena and the Palisades. The storm could bring up to 2 inches of rain in the lowlands between Wednesday and Friday, with up to 4 inches in the mountains and foothills. The National Weather Service estimates a 30% chance that these amounts could double. Meanwhile, cold overnight temperatures are expected to dip close to freezing in some areas through Tuesday, with lows in the 30s and 40s throughout Ventura and L.A. counties. While emergency winter shelters managed by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority are open, they currently have no available beds. Those seeking shelter during the storm are advised to call daily for updates on availability. Today through Tuesday will be windy and dry, with gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour in wind-prone areas. This week's anticipated storm, coupled with last week's rainfall, may be enough to transition into the low fire season, according to Lund. However, she emphasizes that the situation will depend on how the storm develops over the Pacific
