The researchers used the XMM-Newton space telescope to study the atmospheres’ of 70 Ophiuchi, epsilon Eridani, and 61 Cygni stars.

For the first time, astronomers have directly identified stellar winds coming from three Sun-like stars. These winds are highly difficult to directly study, making it an important astronomical development.

Astrospheres function similarly to the heliosphere, a bubble-like structure surrounding the Sun. The heliosphere forms when the solar wind moves away from it. The wind transports the Sun’s magnetic field, generating a bubble-like structure that extends into the interstellar medium. In this new study, the researchers used the XMM-Newton space telescope to study the atmospheres’ of three main-sequence stars: 70 Ophiuchi, epsilon Eridani, and 61 Cygni. “Observing this emission from distant stars is much more tricky due to the faintness of the signal.

The researchers discovered that the mass loss rates of the three Sun-like stars were much higher. This implies that the stellar winds from these stars are stronger than our Sun’s solar wind, probably due to increased magnetic activity.
