More than 30 Columbus elementary buildings received bomb threats via email Monday, prompting investigations by local and federal law enforcement. Authorities say none of the threats were credible and no schools were evacuated or closed.
"The FBI is aware of a number of hoax threats in Central Ohio,” the agency said in a statement. “The FBI addresses these threats with the utmost seriousness, as they put innocent lives at risk and are a federal crime. While we have no information to indicate a credible threat, we are currently working with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to gather, share, and act upon threat information as soon as it comes to our attention. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately.” Columbus City Schools officials confirmed more than 30 elementary schools were among those that received bomb threats via email. A district spokesperson described the situation as “common enough to be unpleasant,” but said it is uncommon to receive this many threats in a single day. Columbus police and fire crews responded to Indian Springs Elementary School and found no threat. District officials confirmed none of the schools were evacuated or closed. According to Columbus police, additional buildings including Forest Park and Georgian Heights elementary schools also received bomb threats via email. Investigators say the same email was sent to dozens of schools and buildings across the city. A S. Front St. building that houses the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and the Franklin County Economic Development & Planning Department was also a target of an emailed bomb threat Monday. Staff at the building told ABC 6 CPD swept the building with K9 assistance and determined there was no threat to staff. The building was not evacuated. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed the Ohio Statehouse received a threat. OHSP told ABC 6 it searched the property after a bomb threat was received by the City of Columbus via email, indicating a bomb was placed on a bench near the Statehouse. "No explosive devices or hazardous materials have been found," said Lieutenant Brice Nihiser with OSHP. "The investigation into the origin of the threat is ongoing. The Patrol remains committed to the safety and welfare of those visiting and working at the Statehouse, and reminds anyone to report suspicious behavior to #677 or 911." Parents were notified of the threats at 10:15 a.m., according to CCS officials. "We encourage families to always share with a teacher, staff member, or administrator when they see or hear something that may put our building at risk," the email stated to parents. "You can also call or text the 24-hour anonymous Safer Together hotline at 844-SAFER-OH or call 911 if you feel you or someone you know is in immediate danger." “Being a parent, it’s uneasy with the times that we’re living in today. It’s very scary,” said Nia Fears, a parent at Indian Springs Elementary School in Clintonville. “There’s people that are smarter than the next. We just don’t know, and that’s the scary part. The kids don’t understand.”Once police determined the buildings were safe, law enforcement cleared the properties and resumed normal operations. District officials said receiving more than 30 threats in one day is unusual. It is unclear what the threats were pertaining to.The FBI is working alongside local, state, and federal agencies to determine who sent the emails and why the schools were targeted.
