A 24-hour strike has shut down Sydney ’s light rail network, causing chaos for commuters and students on Wednesday. No trams will run on any of the L1 Dulwich Hill, L2 Randwick or L3 Kingsford tram lines. The Rail, Tram, and Bus Union called the strike after a failure to reach a deal with network operator Transdev over its demands for a 23 per cent pay rise over four years and five extra days of sick leave.
“Nor can we agree to a wage deal that doesn’t come close to accounting for the huge cost of living increases we’ve seen lately.” The three major tram lines connecting Randwick, Central and Circular Quay will be “fully closed” until 1am on Thursday, and is expected to impact patrons heading to the Vivid festival. Transport for NSW said extra buses would be available for students from Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Girls High School.
