A new report finds that TV streaming services are leading the way offering women more quality roles both on-screen and behind the scenes. It’s not all good news though, the report finds that women still trail behind men in most areas and continue to be stereotyped on screen.
Why is it important to have women in these key roles? The researchers found that programs with at least one female executive producer featured more female protagonists, and more women in other behind-the-scenes positions, than programs with exclusively male executive producers. In other words, having one woman led to the hiring of more women.
Although the situation is improving, programming still reflects stereotypes that suggest women’s role is at home and men’s is in the workforce. Male characters were more likely than female characters to have an identifiable job, and men were more also more likely than women to be seen at work and actually doing work.
Not surprisingly, the female characters also tended to be younger than the male characters, with the majority of female characters in their 20s and 30s. Only 30% of female characters were 40 years old and over, but 45% of males fell into the 40 and over age category. And a larger percentage of male characters than female characters are aging into their 60s and beyond. hours of television a day, so these programs can really shape our perceptions of men and women.
