When it comes to VOD platforms, Prime Video is usually the first that comes to mind, but there’s another major digital release streamer that just got a huge update. Rivaling Prime Video in the VOD department is Fandango at Home, which also benefits from being the primary third-party source of ticket purchases in movie theaters.
The streamer has now announced that, in addition to being able to rent and own movies on Fandango at Home, the service has also added pay-per-view capabilities and the ability to purchase cable TV on demand. Pay-per-view prices are expected to be the same as those charged by the source, and it remains unclear what the price point will be for cable TV. Still, this is a big win for Fandango, which is opening its doors to a much wider audience. Fandango also released an official statement on the expansion, saying that “This strategic move enables Fandango to service the nation’s leading cable operators and partners, by distributing premium entertainment content and live events directly to an audience of consumers across multiple platforms.” One of the biggest sources of PPV events over the last few years has been the UFC, the professional MMA fighting league. However, a recent merger with Paramount means that UFC premium events will no longer have to be purchased via pay-per-view, and they will instead stream on Paramount+ starting next year. Fandango will expand its “first and third-party content distribution into the live events category,” with the hopes of making it the new “streaming home for the biggest live pay-per-view events.” This expansion will support sports, music, and cultural programming, according to the streamer. What Are the Biggest Movies out Right Now? The biggest movie out in theaters right now is Weapons, the critically acclaimed horror film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger. The film recently grossed $43 million during its opening weekend, taking the top spot from the freshly premiered Freakier Friday. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is also chugging along at the box office after recently wrapping up its third weekend in theaters — the film currently sits at a box office total of $441 million globally. Nobody 2, the action sequel starring Bob Odenkirk, is opening in theaters this weekend, but only time will tell if it has the gusto to take the top spot from Weapons. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on Fandango at Home's expansion into cable TV and pay-per-view.
