Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Stranger Things” Season 5, Vol. 2. It’s been a period of growth for Will on “Stranger Things,” and this fifth and final season pushes him to come out of his comfort zone. Episode 7, titled “The Bridge,” includes an emotional monologue when Noah Schnapp’s character, Will, comes out to his family and friends.

Just as the crew plans their fight against Vecna , Will decides to tell those closest to him that he doesn’t like girls. Sitting down and looking at his best friend Mike , mom Joyce , brother Jonathan and more, Will is his most vulnerable self. After making it clear that he is gay, his friends and family proudly support him and tell him they will always be by his side. The moment, Schnapp tells TODAY.com, was “nerve-wracking.” “It was a lot of pressure. The whole cast being there, I did not expect the scene to happen that way. I thought it was just going to be me and Joyce, and that’s already nerve-wracking,” Schnapp says. “So to have everyone standing there watching was really nerve-wracking in a lot of different ways.” In 2022, after Season 4 dropped, Schnapp told Variety that Will was in love with Mike. “I mean, it’s pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike,” he said at the time. “They’ve been intentionally pulling that out over the past few seasons. Even in Season 1, they hinted at that and slowly, slowly grew that storyline.” “Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike,' he added. In Season 5, Will has been curious about sharing his feelings with his friends and family after he sees Robin kissing her girlfriend, Vickie . In the latest episodes, Will seemingly goes to Robin for advice on how to navigate his true feelings. “There’s been so much build up to this moment,” Schnapp tells TODAY.com about Will’s coming out. “It’s been built up in my head for years, like, how are they going to write it? Who are they going to write it to? Obviously in the back of your head you know the impact it’s going to have on a lot of people in the real world struggling with similar issues of their own self identity.” “So you just want it to be as perfect as possible, and with that comes a lot of pressure,” he adds. Schnapp says he was able to give some input and feedback to the show's creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, and its writers. “I did definitely give some input that kind of allowed new scenes to form from that. But for the most part, it was perfect,” he shares, before touching on whom he considers Will’s biggest supporter. “Probably Jonathan,” he says, referring to his character's older brother. “He’s been there since the beginning and always stood by his side. You always see him understanding him and resonating with him. He never goes against him. He always wants the best for his brother.” “I love their relationship,” Schnapp adds, “and I love seeing react to that... When I saw him reacting, it got me for sure.” As for what’s next for Will in the finale, Episode 8 “The Rightside Up,” Schnapp says, “There’s nothing holding him back anymore.” “You can tell, clearly, he’s been able to now harness the most strength he has because he’s come to terms with his own acceptance and accepted himself outwardly,” Schnapp says. “I’m just excited to see the part he plays in that... His own power is the power that we all have, the power of accepting yourself and believing in yourself.” With Will now a major player in the battle against Vecna, the Duffer brothers tell TODAY.com that his superpowers were something they talked about exploring since earlier seasons. “We knew he had this connection since Season 1 to the Upside Down, and ultimately Vecna,” Matt Duffer says, adding that the connection “was something worth exploring.” “We’ve touched on it a little bit in Season 3 and Season 4, but as we got to this final season, we started to talk about it a lot and we ended up talking about Will because everything began with Will, right?” From his vanishing in Season 1 that kickstarted the series, they say, “It felt very organic and, in a way, inevitable to return to Will and to orient the season around him.” So after the final episode, when the credits roll, how does Schnapp hope fans feel? “I just want them to be satisfied like, ‘OK, these stories are finished,’” he says. “And of course they’re going to miss the characters and miss being with them, but I want them to be satisfied that those journeys have come to an end.” “Stranger Things” Season 5, Vol. 3, drops New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET on Netflix.
