God, I really forgot how much chaos goes down in 'Stranger Things' Season 4.
Stranger ThingsSo, in case you didn't have time for a rewatch of every season — or even just Season 4 — ahead of the final season, don't worry. I'm here to remind you about what happened, where all the characters are, and what you just really need to remember before the final season ofAfter the destruction of the Starcourt Mall and losing her powers in the Season 3 finale, Eleven moves with the Byers family to California.
Eight months later, Season 4 begins with Eleven struggling to fit in at school. Need I remind you of the secondhand embarrassment-inducing scene where she tries to use her powers? This all culminates in her attacking Angela, a mean girl at school, and being arrested. It's then that Dr. Sam Owens takes her from police custody and brings her to a secret lab run by Dr. Brenner called The Nina Project, a program designed to help her rediscover her powers. While undergoing a series of tests, Eleven recalls her upbringing in Hawkins Lab, specifically an orderly who turns out to be One, aka Henry Creel. Eleven learns that when she was younger, she banished Henry to the Upside Down, thus creating Vecna. This discovery enables Eleven to regain her powers. After escaping the US military and The Nina Project, Eleven is reunited with Mike, Will, and Jonathan. Unable to get back to Hawkins before the rest of their friends fight Vecna, Eleven decides to"piggyback" into Max's mind to attempt to protect her. Despite her best efforts, Eleven is bested by Vecna, who makes her watch him nearly kill Max.Season 4 is Max's season. Following Billy's death, Max is dealing with her grief the only way she knows how, by distancing herself from her friends and breaking up with Lucas. After being the one to see Chrissy at Eddie's trailer the night of her murder, Max alerts Dustin that the Upside Down could be involved. While trying to find out more about Vecna, Max realizes that she's his next victim after learning she's experiencing the same symptoms Chrissy did before she died. This leads to arguably one ofAfter learning of Vecna's true plan, Max decides to use herself as bait in order to make Vecna vulnerable, so the others can hopefully kill him in the Upside Down. Max, Lucas, and Erica go to the Creel house to lure Vecna out. Max opens up about how there was a moment when she wanted Billy to die, and her depression following his death, which causes Vecna to grab her again. Although she tries to hide from Vecna in a good memory of the Snow Ball dance from Season 2, Vecna eventually finds Max and nearly kills her until Eleven puts up one last fight. After losing her eyesight and dying in Lucas's arms, a final gate opens in Hawkins, causing an earthquake and devastation in the town. Eleven is able to bring Max back, but two days later, she's still in a coma at the hospital.is named the prime suspect in a series of murders around Hawkins, Dustin takes matters into his own hands to clear Eddie's name. Following the discovery that Chrissy's death is linked to the Upside Down, Dustin, Steve, Nancy, Lucas, Robin, and Max begin tracking down what could be causing it, which takes them to Vecna and the old Creel house. While trying to hide Eddie, Dustin notices his compass going haywire, which leads to the discovery that a small gate to the Upside Down has been opened at the bottom of Lovers Lake, which Dustin nicknames"Water Gate." After Steve, Nancy, Robin, and Eddie go through the gate and get trapped, Dustin and Nancy figure out they can communicate with each other using the lights, just like Will did with Joyce in Season 1. When the group returns, they realize they must eventually go back to the Upside Down to fight Vecna. Once there, Eddie and Dustin try to create a distraction and fight off a group of Demobats. When it proves to be too much, Eddie sends Dustin back through a gate in order to protect him. However, Dustin goes back just in time to see Eddie be swarmed by Demobats and die in his arms. Following the battle, Dustin talks to Eddie's uncle and tells him he was with him when the"earthquake hit," and he died.In Season 4, Mike travels to California to spend spring break with Eleven and the Byers family. After El's taken by Dr. Owens, Mike spends the season with Will, Jonathan, and Jonathan's friend Argyle, trying to find Eleven. After the US military storms the Byers' house in search of Eleven, Mike and the California crew flee and begin their own search for her and The Nina Project. After going to Dustin's girlfriend, Suzie, for help, Mike is able to track down Eleven and save her from Dr. Brenner, as well as the US military, who are hell-bent on killing her. When Eleven decides to"piggyback" into Max's mind, Mike is there alongside Will, Jonathan, and Argyle, who create a sensory deprivation tank for her using a freezer at a Surfer Boys Pizza location. When Vecna holds Eleven hostage, Mike speaks to her and tells her she's a superhero and needs to fight to stop him. Two days after Vecna's attack, Mike, Will, Jonathan, Eleven, and Argyle return to Hawkins, which has been torn apart. When we last saw Will in Season 4, he was with Mike, Jonathan, and Argyle trying to track down Eleven. With a rare season that didn't focus on Will being taken by the Upside Down or controlled by a monster, his main storyline shifted to his friendship with Mike, which is finally hinted at beingon Will's end. Namely, while driving to find Eleven in Nevada, Will reveals to Mike a painting he made depicting Mike leading their party. Although telling Mike it's how Eleven feels, Will expresses how he's different, but Mike makes him feel like he's better for being that way. At the end of the season, Will returns to Hawkins, and after reuniting with his mom and Hopper, he's the first one to sense that their fight with Vecna isn't over, as the Upside Down begins to invade Hawkins.Lucas starts Season 4 in a different spot than his friends, in that he's become part of the popular crowd since starting high school. He's joined the basketball team and doesn't have time to hang out with Mike, Dustin, Eddie, and his sister, Erica, at the Hellfire Club. After scoring the winning shot at the basketball game, Lucas is partying with Jason and his other teammates when news spreads that Chrissy has been killed. While Jason, who was dating Chrissy, and the jocks look to hunt down Eddie, Lucas eventually splits off from them to find Dustin, Max, Steve, Nancy, and Robin. When the group decides to go into battle with Vecna, Lucas and Erica accompany Max to the Creel house to lure Vecna out. While Max is under Vecna's curse, Jason arrives and confronts Lucas over Chrissy's death and his involvement. Once Max is nearly killed by Vecna, Lucas screams for help as a gate to the Upside Down rips through the Creel house, also killing Jason. Afterwards, Lucas sits at Max's bedside at the hospital, reading to her. After learning of Chrissy's death, Nancy drags Fred, who works with her on the school's newspaper, to investigate. While there, Nancy talks to Eddie's uncle and learns about Victor Creel, who has been locked up for years after being arrested for the murder of his family. And while this is happening, Fred is taken by Vecna and becomes his second victim. Eventually, Steve, Dustin, and Lucas are charged with watching Max, Nancy visits Victor with Robin, and they learn the true story about his family's deaths. Soon after Max is almost taken by Vecna, Nancy discovers that the Creel house seems to be an important location, and while visiting it, she learns that Vecna is in the Creel house in the Upside Down. After going to save Steve in the Upside Down, Nancy discovers that the Upside Down is stuck in the past, specifically the day Will Byers originally went missing in Season 1. While trying to escape, Vecna finds Nancy and tries to kill her by using her guilt surrounding Barb's death. While in Vecna's world, Nancy learns the truth about what really happened at the Creel house. Vecna shows Nancy a vision of Hawkins being destroyed and four gates opening across town, telling her that she needs to reveal everything he has shown her to Eleven. During the final fight with Vecna, Nancy enters the Creel house in the Upside Down with Steve and Robin to attack Vecna's body. She notably shoots an already burning Vecna, so he falls out of the Creel house, injured. After graduating from Hawkins High, Steve is working at the video store with Robin, dating around, and apparently still dealing with his feelings for Nancy. When Dustin and Max arrive at the video store and tell him and Robin about Eddie being framed for Chrissy's murder and the re-emergence of Upside Down chaos, Steve springs back into babysitter mode in order to help. Following the discovery of the new gate at the bottom of Lovers Lake, Steve decides to be the one to dive in to reach it. He gets dragged into the Upside Down and gets trapped there with Nancy, Robin, and Eddie jumping in to save him. Eventually, Dustin and Lucas figure out a way to get them back home. When Steve returns to the Upside Down for the final battle, he accompanies Robin and Nancy to the Creel house to try and kill Vecna. Afterward, Steve volunteers at Hawkins High with Robin and Dustin to help organize supplies and food for those affected by the"earthquake," aka the Upside Down arriving in Hawkins. At the start of Season 4, Robin is working at the video store with Steve and has a crush on Vickie, a fellow student and band member. After Dustin and Max reveal to her and Steve that Chrissy's death wasn't Eddie's fault but likely the work of something from the Upside Down, Robin springs into action to help once again. This time, she investigates Victor Creel and his possible connection to the current events unfolding in Hawkins alongside Nancy. Also, Robin is convinced that Nancy might still have feelings for Steve as well. After being trapped in the Upside Down with Nancy, Steve, and Eddie, Robin escapes with them after Dustin, Erica, and Lucas manage to find another gate in town and pull them out. During the final fight with Vecna, Robin goes with Steve and Nancy to the Creel house to try and kill Vecna. Two days later, Robin volunteers alongside Vickie as Steve looks on and smiles.Jonathan begins Season 4 living in California and hanging out with his new friend, Argyle. He's also a little unsure of where his relationship with Nancy stands, considering she doesn't come visit him for spring break, and he's decided not to attend the same college as her. After Eleven is taken, Jonathan joins Will, Mike, and Argyle on a journey to find where she is being held. With the help of Suzie, Jonathan and the California crew are able to find El at The Nina Project. After witnessing Mike and Will's conversation in the car, Jonathan talks to his brother, saying Will can always turn to him for help, and nothing will ever change the fact that he loves him and he's his brother. Eventually, Jonathan returns to Hawkins with the California crew, where he reunites with Nancy and everyone else. Him and Nancy talk about how much they still care for each other, too.Following the Battle of Starcourt and Hopper's apparent death, Joyce relocated Will, Jonathan, and Eleven to California. At the beginning of Season 4, Joyce receives a mysterious package from Russia containing a doll with a message that suggests Hopper's survival. Alongside Murray, she contacts Enzo, a Russian prison guard who is helping Hopper try and escape. They arrive in Alaska, where Yuri, a smuggler, is set to take them to Russia. However, Yuri betrays them all, and now Joyce and Murray must find their own way into the prison. Upon arriving in Russia, Murray and Joyce manage to overtake Yuri and have him and Joyce pose as prisoners, with Murray posing as Yuri, to gain entry into the prison and find Hopper. They arrive just as Hopper, Enzo, and the rest of the prisoners are forced to fight Demogorgons. Eventually, Joyce reunites with Hopper, and the group must find a way to escape the prison. In the end, Joyce, Hopper, and Murray fight off Demogorgons in the Russian prison to hopefully give Eleven and the gang some help back in Hawkins. She eventually makes it back to town alongside Hopper. While everyone in Hawkins thinks he's dead, Hopper begins Season 4 trapped in a Russian prison. After befriending Enzo and getting a message to Joyce, Hopper attempts to escape but is recaptured when Yuri betrays them. Hopper and Enzo are now prisoners together, and quickly learn that the Russians have Demogorgons that they are making prisoners fight against. Just when Hopper and Enzo are fighting one of these monsters, Joyce and Murray arrive to break them out of prison. While they all manage to escape the Russian prison, Hopper attempts to contact Dr. Owens and learns that Eleven, Will, Jonathan, and the entire town of Hawkins are in danger. Hopper, Joyce, and Murray decide to return to the prison to attempt to help stop the Upside Down by fighting the Demogorgons that the Russians are using. After fighting the Demogorgons, Hopper, Joyce, and Murray escape Russia with Yuri and Enzo. Once he returns to Hawkins, he's able to reunite with Eleven and the rest of the group before the Upside Down starts to invade Hawkins. After the events of Season 1, Dr. Brenner is believed to be dead and has been ousted from Hawkins Lab, replaced by Dr. Sam Owens. When Season 4 begins and Eleven is taken by Owens, it's revealed that the duo has started The Nina Project together. While Eleven is initially against working with Papa, she eventually lets him help her regain her memories and how she banished Henry to the Upside Down. He tells Eleven that following her encounter with Henry, she lost her memories of what happened and the true scope of her powers. Brenner reveals he will not let Eleven go again, and they will continue their work together. But Eleven tells Brenner that everything that has happened is because of him and his search for Henry. Soon, the US military, led by Lt. Jack Sullivan, arrives at The Nina Project, with the intent of capturing Eleven. Brenner tries to escape with Eleven, but is shot. After a final conversation with Eleven, he dies in the penultimate episode of Season 4.In Season 4, Dr. Sam Owens takes Eleven from police custody and brings her to The Nina Project in the hopes of restoring Eleven's powers. After Eleven successfully regains her memories and learns about Henry/One, Owens suggests that he accompany Eleven back to Hawkins so she can help in the fight against Henry. However, Brenner won't allow Eleven to leave, and he has Owens locked up in the lab. After the US military arrived and Brenner's death, Owens is presumed to have survived, having last been seen handcuffed to a pipe in the lab.Vecna was introduced as the big villain in Season 4; however, upon rewatch, many think we actually see him as the one who takes Will in the very first episode of the series. After Chrissy is killed by a seemingly otherworldly entity, Dustin is the one to figure out that it sounds like Vecna's curse, and that this new villain is likely the source. Vecna preys on his victims by exploiting their PTSD and fears, and Max soon discovers that she's his next victim. After being trapped in the Upside Down, Nancy learns the truth about Vecna, while Eleven remembers her past at Hawkins Lab. It's revealed that Vecna is actually Henry Creel, who is also Dr. Brenner's first subject, aka One. Henry developed psychic abilities and ultimately used them to torture his family, eventually killing his mom and sister. His dad, Victor Creel, is arrested for murder and presumed the killer. Meanwhile, Henry was taken into the care of Hawkins Lab and Dr. Brenner. Posing as an orderly when Eleven was a child, she was eventually tricked by Henry to remove an implant in him that was suppressing his powers. In a fit of rage, he murders the other test subjects, except Eleven, who banishes him to the Upside Down, thus turning him into Vecna. Dr. Brenner spent years using Eleven to try to find Henry in the Upside Down, to no avail. Now that he's resurfaced, he's using each of his murder victims as a way to open gates — four to be precise — to the Upside Down in Hawkins. In the final battle of Season 4, Max is used as bait, while Steve, Nancy, and Robin travel to the Creel house in the Upside Down to attack Vecna's body. While they manage to hurt Vecna, he escapes the Creel house, and Max is nearly killed in the process.. While the events of the play take place before Season 1, there are two important facts that could come in handy to know about ahead of Season 5:fan, I went earlier this year and was blown away by how they create the Upside Down and its monsters on stage.First, the play explores the origins of Henry Creel, aka Vecna. It shows him as a student at Hawkins High School alongside Joyce, Hopper, Bob Newby, Karen Wheeler, and more, which is something the TV show hasn't explored . The play spans from Henry and the Creel family's arrival in town to Henry's eventual capture by Dr. Brenner and Hawkins Lab. It also depicts how Henry's father, Victor Creel, is accused of the murder of his wife and daughter., but she is likely to be important going into the final season. In the play, it's revealed that Patty and Henry were classmates and have a romantic relationship. Henry uses his powers and connection to the Upside Down to help Patty try and find her birth mother. However, by the end, Henry's anger and powers become all-consuming, causing him to hurt Patty. Now, the show has not mentioned Patty at all, LOL. So, very curious to see how they incorporate her into the final season, considering she has such huge ties to Henry/Vecna.in three parts soon. Vol. 1 on Nov. 26, Vol. 2 on Dec. 25, and then the series finale on Dec. 31, all at 8 p.m. ET.
