A pair of stars from two of Netflix's biggest recent hit series are about to collide for the unexpected road trip of a lifetime. Next week, the indie crime drama Silver Star arrives on digital, casting Boots alum Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson as a sharp-tongued ex-con and Civil War re-enactor on the run from the law alongside Stranger Things' Grace Van Dien as a heavily pregnant 18-year-old whom Johnson kidnaps during a bank heist gone very wrong.
Despite being so different and their situation so precarious, however, they end up making for surprisingly effective, if uneasy, partners. Collider can exclusively share a new sneak peek that shows off that unique bond as the duo gets dressed to hit the road. Silver Star follows Billie right after she's released from prison as she learns her estranged parents are facing eviction. Desperate to find a way to help, she stages the aforementioned robbery that ends with Franny in her car as her accidental, oddly excited hostage, and sirens closing in on them. Before they can continue their chaotic road trip to who knows where, though, they need disguises to avoid detection by the police, which is where our clip begins. Billie takes charge in the dressing room of a store, yanking tags off a few items while Franny lambasts her for a scheme that would've screwed her over yet again. She's not made any less annoyed by Billie's choice of clothes, which the ex-con picked to hide Franny's baby bump, though it ends up making her look"like a sack of potatoes." As shown in the clip, the feelings are complicated between the captor and hostage. Through their stumbling together on the road from one disastrous plan to another, their partnership becomes something neither expected when they were first thrust together. Right now, though, the trust between them has been broken, with Franny wondering if Billie will just ditch her once she has the money she needs. As Billie helps her get her new outfit on, she admits that she panicked and apologizes for nearly leaving her behind. Their attention quickly turns back to Franny's"gym teacher" attire and Billie's more feminine outfit, which her partner and crime can't help but get a kick out of. Even though Billie doesn't respond, there's a palpable chemistry between them as they make amends and playfully plan their next move that will only build as this unlikely Bonnie & Clyde pursue a risky deal that will get them both out of their current situation alive. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi 'Silver Star' Reunites Two Frequent Collaborators Behind the Camera Frequent collaborators Ruben Amar and Lola Bessis co-wrote and co-directed Silver Star and produced it through their Les Films de la Fusée banner in association with Carte Blanche and Valerie Steinberg Productions. This marks their first time working behind the camera together since the 2013 SXSW entry Swim Little Fish Swim, which Bessis also starred in. Their latest collaboration made its debut at the Deauville American Film Festival in 2024 and has since earned high marks from critics both for the sheer chaos Van Dien and Johnson go through together and the deeper, queer story of reinvention both undergo through their connection with one another. Back when it was acquired, Indican Randolph Kret not only evoked Bonnie & Clyde, but also other premier indie filmmakers in comparison to Silver Star's depiction of a very American tale.
