Hopper with a couple of superpowered baddies in Stranger Things 5
Ever since its first episode, Stranger Things has been haunted by the mysterious realm known as the Upside Down. Most of the threats, from the massive Mind Flayer to the malevolent Vecna have come from the Upside Down, which raises the question: is it an alternate dimension, or Hell itself? The answer was finally revealed during the latest batch of Stranger Things Season 5 episodes, particularly"The Bridge", and the answer changes everything viewers have come to know about the series.
In"The Bridge", Dustin finds out that the Upside Down is not an alternate dimension, but rather a wormhole that leads to a mysterious realm that he dubs"The Abyss". It's in the Abyss that Henry Creel was transformed into Vecna after Eleven banished him there, and it also serves as the home of the various abominations that populate the Upside Down. Its creation also underlines a dark truth that's been at the heart of Stranger Things' story, namely when it comes to the child characters. With The Upside Down Reveal in 'Stranger Things', The Real Villains Are Revealed There's another wrinkle to the Upside Down's origin, and that's because it was created by Eleven herself. Dustin tells Eleven that she gave birth to the Upside Down when she started searching for Vecna at the command of Dr. Brenner , and that Vecna has been using it to cross into Hawkins. It's also where he retreated after he was seemingly defeated in Stranger Things Season 4, and where he kept Will Byers during Season 1, eventually infecting Will with parasites. Season 5 pays this off by revealing that Will has a psychic connection and powers similar to Eleven's, which he uses to battle the skinless sorcerer. Vecna's weaponization of Will mirrors another major development, where Eleven finds her"sister" Kali being experimented on. Kali tells Eleven that Dr. Kay has been drawing her blood and injecting pregnant woman with it, hoping to replicate her powers. Brenner used the same process to create Eleven and her"siblings", showcasing that the true evil of Stranger Things are the scientists who will sacrifice anything to create weapons. Kay is repeating the same sins as Brenner, and Vecna, for all his dark deeds, is as much a victim as Eleven was. It's only right that the younger protagonists will be the ones to break the cycle of darkness surrounding Hawkins. In fact, Stranger Things might be teeing up a major sacrifice for its series finale. After Kali reveals what Dr. Kay was doing to her, she tells Eleven that the only true way to end the terror of Vecna is to destroy the Upside Down and stay inside it, thus preventing others from weaponizing them. Whether Eleven goes through with it or not is being saved for the series finale, yet it also highlights the weight that the adults who were supposed to protect her have heaped upon her shoulders. Posts 6 By Hannah Hunt The Upside Down's Origin in 'Stranger Things' Was Planned From Day One It turns out that the Upside Down secretly being a wormhole was part of Stranger Things' long-term plan. Series co-creator Matt Duffer unpacked the decision, telling Variety that he and his brother Ross ended up developing the twist during Season 1. In true Stranger Things fashion, they used another '80s touchstone in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for inspiration. "That was something that I can say was early on. That was all the way back in Season 1: Netflix just wanted us to explain the mythology to them, because we were very adamant early on, “We don’t want to explain it in the show. We like that there’s mystery, and that there’s a lot that you don’t understand by the end of the season.” They said, “That’s fine, but we would like to know.” I think it was actually a really good exercise — we spent quite a bit of time with our writers figuring out exactly what the Upside Down was. We wrote a 20-page mythology document. It wasn’t called the Abyss at that point; it was called Dimension X, which is a Ninja Turtle reference." Stranger Things has left nearly no stone unturned with Season 5, as it's finally starting to reveal some of the series' biggest mysteries. In the process, it's also revealing that some evils don't come from different dimensions, but from humanity's darker impulses.
