Stranded dolphin rescued from Mersing beach

MERSING: Johor Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel, with the help of the FIsheries Department, have rescued a beached dolphin found on Pantai Air Papan here.

According to a spokesman, Mersing APM beach rescue tower personnel spotted the beached mammal at 8.48am on Saturday morning.

"He was putting up red flags along the coastline when he spotted the dolphin some 800m away from the watchtower. "He tried to release the dolphin, which weighed around 30kg, back into the water but was unable to do it because of high tide and strong winds," the spokesman said. The APM spokesman added that they then contacted the Fisheries Department for further assistance to rescue the dolphin which appeared to have an injury on its tail.

"Personnel from the Fisheries Department arrived at the scene at around 9.15am and they managed to release it back into the sea at Teluk Buih," the spokesman said.
