Texas players console each other after a 7-6 loss to Stanford in an NCAA college baseball tournament super regional game in Stanford, Calif., Monday, June 12, 2023.Strake Jesuit baseball coach Raul Garcia-Rameau was watching Game 3 of Texas-Stanford in the NCAA super regionals Mondaylifted a fly ball into short right-center field with two outs in the ninth inning.

It appeared the Longhorns and Cardinal were headed to extra innings, but the ball fell untouched to the ground at Stanford’s Sunken Diamond between right fielder Dylan Campbell, center fielder Eric Kennedy and second baseman Jack O’Dowd. By the time Texas players located it, Alberto Rios was scoring from second base and Stanford was celebrating a 7-6 victory. The unlikely finish sent the Cardinal to the Men’s College World Series while the Longhorns absorbed a cruel end to their season.

“In the game of baseball, until that last out is made, you never know what is going to happen,” said Garcia-Rameau, who coached Campbell in high school. “It’s that part of the night where the lights haven’t come into full effect … they said it’s a tough sky there.Garcia-Rameau said he and Campbell exchanged text messages afterward.

Texas' Dylan Campbell , celebrating a homer against Miami in the NCAA regionals, had a school-record 38-game hitting streak this season.“I just said, ‘Hey, I’ve got your back’,” Garcia-Rameau said. “He was having a really good season. He’s a great kid, very competitive and strong between the ears.
