Storm Otto has ripped apart buildings and left thousands of homes without power across northern England and Scotland

Mark Rough, operations director at SSEN Distribution, said: “Due to the extent of damage, some customers are likely to remain off supply for over 48 hours. The storm has caused structural damage, tearing the roofs off Burnside Primary School in Carnoustie, Scotland, and a working men’s club in Newton Aycliffe, near Durham.

North Yorkshire Police said they had received “numerous calls” involving high-sided vehicles being blown over on the A1 and other routes, and urged motorists to “slow down”.
