The cleanup began Sunday morning. Photos of the aftermath showed shattered glass doors and windows and multiple storefronts where people appeared to have broken in and ransacked merchandise. The scene echoed ones inthat also saw violent demonstrations the night before as people continued to protest the death of George Floyd, an African American man who died after a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes. About 50 people gathered Sunday morning to protest near Lightfoot’s house in the city’s Logan Square neighborhood. “We came to be here as soon as the curfew lifted to tell her that, you know, there shouldn’t be a curfew,” said Brian Bean, one of the protesters. “I want people to not arrest normal people like me and people that I know.” People gather near Mayor Lightfoot's residence in Logan Square to protest the citywide curfew she imposed Saturday night.The demonstration began at 6 a.m., at the end of the curfew the mayor imposed the previous night in response to the escalating situation in Chicago’s downtown area on Saturday. Mayor Lori LightfootThe mayor praised those who had protested peacefully, but she angrily condemned people who turned violent late in the afternoon and long into the night. “I will not allow criminals to take over our city and shame us,” Lightfoot said at a hastily arranged press conference Saturday evening. “I want to express my disappointment, really, my total disgust at the number of others who came to the day’s protest armed for all-out battle.” The curfew did not stop looting in the Loop and the River North area. Targets included banks, pharmacies, an iconic camera shop and upscale department stores. Nick Boskovich, owner of Hi-Vibe organic juice shop at Kinzie and LaSalle Streets, swept up broken glass Sunday morning. Boskovich said he was worried more damage would happen tonight. He said it’s “time to let the police do their job. You can’t allow anarchy and citizens to be terrorized.”The looting spread to big-box stores in the South Loop, then to commercial areas on both the South and North sides.WBEZ reporters Chip Mitchell, Dan Mihalopoulos and Patrick Smith contributed to this story.
