Produced by World of Wonder's Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the movie stars Ginger Minj and Jujubee as Tess and DeeDee, two hopeful train hostesses who must save their Glamazonian Express from a deadly Stormaganza. Brooke Lynn Hytes plays the classic platinum blonde mean girl Amber, who, along with co-meanies Marty Lauter (Marcia Marcia Marcia) and Symone, tries to thwart their efforts.
RuPaul appears as Judy Gagwell, President of the United States, a character who overcomes a tragic past to step in and help. The film also features Latrice Royale as longtime hustler Barbra, with cameos by Monét X Change and Angeria Paris VanMicheals. The movie, released by Bleecker Street, is a campy comedy filled with hunky conductors, horny divorcées, disco balls, and scorpions, and it marks a significant moment for drag representation on screen.
The film was shot over just 19 days, which required the cast to be agile and instinctive. Brooke Lynn Hytes noted that unlike her work on RuPaul's Drag Race, where more is often better, this film demanded nuance and restraint. She had to learn to pull back and trust the script, which was written by Christina Friel and Connor Wright. The screenplay originally took place on an airplane, but later shifted to a train setting.
The quick production schedule meant that the actors had to rely on their instincts, making the comedy feel spontaneous and fresh. For drag queens used to meticulously crafting their looks, handing over control to a makeup artist and costume designer was a challenge. Brooke Lynn Hytes admitted that letting go of her signature style was difficult, but she trusted the process and the director's vision. Stop!
That! Train! is one of the few recent films to feature drag artists in starring roles as women, not as drag queens. This distinction is important because it allows the actors to showcase their range without the layers of camp performance that often define drag. The film arrives at a time when drag has faced significant backlash, yet it offers a joyful escape.
The set was filled with camaraderie, as the drag queens bonded with each other and with celebrity guests like Lisa Rinna, Nicole Richie, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. For many of the cast members, it was a rare opportunity to work in a large group and enjoy a break from the solitary nature of touring.
