Writing for the Daily Record, ASLEF general-secretary Mick Whelan says the Stonehaven rail crash that claimed three lives is proof corporate homicide laws in Scotland are inadequate.

Hearing from the families and survivors this week was heart rendering and a reminder of the devastation experienced by the families of Brett, Donald and Christopher and our thoughts are as always with them. We are also clear that the loss and sadness as well as anger they feel, because of the litany of mistakes that led to this avoidable crash should never happen again.

They presided over a series of failures that resulted in the deaths of those three people who expected and deserved better protection whilst working and travelling on our railways. Critical to making sure our trains are safe in the future is holding people accountable. It cannot be right that a faceless organisation, not individuals, are held accountable and that the punishment is a £6.7m fine that is paid out of the public purse.
