Thefts of catalytic converters are a problem nationwide, and hot-dog shaped vehicles are not immune.
The converter was stolen from the easy-to-recognize vehicle while it was in the parking lot of a hotel in Las Vegas last week,. The 27-foot-long vehicle was in Las Vegas as part of a Super Bowl promotion.
KLAS reports the crew driving the vehicle knew something was wrong when they couldn’t get it started. It was towed to an auto shop, which discovered the converter was missing. Workers at the auto shop were able to make a temporary repair so the vehicle could get back on the road,Meanwhile, thefts of catalytic converters remain a problem nationwide. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, there were 14,433 reported thefts in 2020, a 325% increase in a single year. The converters are coveted by thieves because they contain rare metals and can be sold to recyclers for $50 to $250 apiece, the NICB says.
