It turns out there’s no wrong way to experience one of the world’s smallest sports cars.

I can’t resist getting a taste of local car culture when I travel, even when I’m on vacation. So when my wife planned a trip for us to Japan, I knew I wanted to drive something market-specific. As I kicked around ideas, I made it my goal to get behind the wheel of, the smallest class of passenger vehicles available for sale in Japan. A coworker recommended I check out Omoshiro Rent-a-Car, a company easy for English speakers to use, with an impressive variety of makes and models on offer.

Even in Japan, where kei cars are common, the S660 feels minuscule around delivery trucks. Its small footprint is perfect for the country’s relatively narrow lanes, however, and for fitting into almost every conceivable parking spot. Thanks to the Honda’s tidy dimensions, I immediately felt confident making lane changes and passes as we merged onto the freeway.

These modifications are noticeable from the second the S660 fires up. The little Honda is much louder than its stock counterpart from the moment you press the start button. As I hit the road for a test drive, the Spoon Sports–installed exhaust made the S660 sound a lot more ferocious than the example I rented in Japan. As I punched the throttle to get up to speed, hilarious whistling from the turbocharger sang out from behind me until I had to lift.
